Title: Imprint
Author: smilebackwards
Series: Avengers/Dollhouse
Pairing: Steve/Tony
Genre: kind of mindfuck? Also, be prepared for the usual consent issues that come with the entire Dollhouse concept.
WIP?: One-shot, way too short, complete :(
Brief Summary: Uniform has twelve different imprints, by far the least number of personalities compared to the other Actives in the Dollhouse.
Your thoughts?: Woooooooooah this is a really, really awesome fusion. I can't really talk about it, or my reactions to it, without giving away the whole premise but let's just say that I wish it was a series. I would give money for it to be a series.
It's just that, last time Tony plugged in Steve, ten minutes before the clock struck midnight, before Tony packed Steve away and turned Uniform over to the careful hands of X-ray and Bravo and the weird herd behavior they'd all been displaying since the time Bravo came home with three bullet holes, he'd looked at Tony like maybe he'd been programmed open-minded as well as tactically brilliant and kind and artistic and fucking perfect.

Title: still officially lost
Author: pollyrepeat
Series: The Avengers
Pairing: None (it's Coulson and Clint centric, but this is Not That Kind of fic. In fact, given the timeline, it would be kind of uncomfortable if it was)
Genre: Pre-series
WIP?: Lengthy one-shot, complete
Brief Summary: “Barton has clearly imprinted on you,” Fury starts, and keeps talking right over Phil’s knee-jerk, horrified, “He has not,” to seal Phil’s doom by saying, “so I’ve decided that you’re going to take primary responsibility for him from now on.”
“Oh, god,” Phil says, faintly, before he can stop himself.
(Otherwise known as, SHIELD: The Early Years.)
Your thoughts: This fic is my very favorite backstory for Clint and how he became a part of SHIELD. It goes from tetchy and very much damaged teenager to something more approximating the Hawkeye we know, but it's not an easy journey, and of course he and tight-laced Coulson are not instant besties. Coulson, for his part, needs a little unruly in his life. Excellent characterization, and I love the way it ends.

I'm just going to post one or two at a time, sporadically, instead of trying to work myself up to a big ol' dump of updates.
Also I have recently discovered the pain of joining a new fandom, namely that of the Avengers movieverse (which predictably EXPLODED after the movie came out. EVERYTHING I READ IS A WIP. I AM SO TIRED OF BEING LEFT HANGING.
I have a pathetic regimen of checking for updates like, every day. Those authors must get so many hits on their stories just from my desperate clicking.
Anyway, finals, so I'm off to study. Hope you're well!
Holy crap it's been a while. And in that time I went and lost my mind over both the Avengers and X-men first class, so if you're not into superhero movies this may be a good time to go drink some tea or something.

ALSO. There will be spoilers in the rest of this post (either in the summary or thoughts). This is thy warning.

Recs — some with spoilers, some without — behind the cutCollapse )

Title: Scream Hallelujah, Darling
Author: Fulgaraverde
Series: X-men: First Class
Pairing: Erik/Charles
WIP?: One shot, complete
Brief Summary: It's such a small, innocuous thing, a coin. It's hard to believe it could cause so much damage. For the X Men Big Bang.
Your thoughts: Oh god this is horrible. It's hard to talk about this fic without spoiling it entirely, but basically the Flowers-for-Algernon-esque premise is that Charles' mind, when he was connected to Shaw, was damaged and his telepathy more or less lost. It's a slow slide from there.

And now, the WIP section. All of these are fabulous, and tempting, but they're also very much not completed yet so if you can't handle the suspense then I recommend checking back in a couple months.

Title: Magpie
Author: waldorph
Series: Star Trek (2009)
Pairing: Building up to be Spock/Kirk
Genre: AU
WIP?: Yesss :( but the author's still updating on the kinda-sorta regular!
Brief Summary: Spock met Jim when he was 7 and Jim was 6. It has since been generally agreed that this was a mistake (or: the one where they grow up together and things are simultaneously better and worse for it).
Your thoughts?: Waldorph is responsible for all that is good and right in the Star Trek fandom. Okay, not quite, but (s)he has written my very favorite ST fic of all time, and a bajillion others that are borderline works of art — this is a fun concept, and there's traces of humor in it, but mostly I love how maybe if baby!Jim had someone to have his back growing up he would've still turned out broken, but he wouldn't have turned out quite so broken in quite the same ways.

Title: Least of All Possible Mistakes
Author: rageprufrock
Series: Sherlock
Pairing: Lestrade/Mycroft
Genre: Genderbend
WIP: Also yes. Pourqqueeeee
Brief Summary: "If ever a people deserved tasering, it’s Holmeses."
Your thoughts?: It is entirely possible that I am inflicting my WIP's on you just so I know that someone, somewhere, is suffering from the same protracted suspense that I am. Anyway.
Fantastically well done girl!Lestrade POV. Just sat in my bed repeating the words "fuck. fuck. fuckity fuck. fuck." over and over again when I got to the end of this chapter. And if you've ever read any of rageprufrock's Merlin or HP fic then you know that she's ridiculously fabulous and an amazing storyteller, so. Arggggh update!

Alright, I'm off to class, but I've got more (specifically some X-men stuff I want to share. somewhere).

just remembered how lj works so this goes behind a cut too now :)Collapse )

massive fic duuump

Some Social Network/Spiderman, Sherlock, Suits, and Avengers behind the cutCollapse )

I have got to stop writing these at 1 a.m. because I lose interest halfway through. I'm about this close to posting a list of titles and just going to bed. I'm literally falling asleep as I write this so I'm just going to put these up, then come back and finish tomorrow :) Night y'all!

Title: Ready, Fire, Aim
Author: gyzym
Series: Avengers movieverse
Pairing: Steve/Tony
WIP?: Chaptered, complete. There's also a retelling of the story from Steve's point of view, a sequel, and a couple in-universe one shots.
Summary: “Captain America is a dick,” says Tony, “and I want that written on my fucking tombstone.”
Your thoughts?: I like this because it has a really cool team dynamic. I don't know, I'm really tired, but I like the way that it's a slow understanding. The whole lot of them are extremely strong personalities and potential killing machines that are thrown together by necessity - it's going to take a minute for them to turn into the family structure that apparently appears instantaneously in most of the other fics I read.

Title: Tomorrow Belongs To Me
Author: valtyr
Series: Avengers (movieverses, as far as I can remember)
Pairing: Steve/Tony, Jane/Thor, little bit of Steve/Natasha for funsies
WIP?: Chaptered, complete
Summary: Steve wakes up in the 21st Century. He doesn't think much of it, and it's dubious about him. He meets a Norse God, joins a superhero team, and feels terribly awkward about the whole momument at Arlington he's rendered obsolete by not being dead. Meanwhile, Tony is trying to make his mark on history by being the man who finally drove Nick Fury over the edge.
Your thoughts?: This handles Steve's immersion in the 21st century really well. It's also got an honest-to-goodness case!fic (or whatever the superhero equivalent of a case is, idek, there's an actual plot). I don't know, like I said, tired, and I have some place to be. Just really good. I did skip over a lot of the plotty parts though because it's very Thor heavy and I hadn't watched the movie at that point - you really have to have seen Thor and Captain America if you want a hope of understanding what's going on.

Seriously, Ivy? How do we not have Avengers recs? Let's get on that shit. I just watched Captain America the other day and I am certifiably hooked, been trolling through lots of comic-based things that I don't have time to learn the backstory for and the movie doesn't come out 'til march, mama needs some fiiiic

Title: To the Victor, The Spoil
Author: Annakovsky
Series: The Hunger Games
Pairing: Katniss/Haymitch (squicky, I know, but it somehow fits with the story)
WIP?: one-shot, complete
Genre: AU, deathfic, DARK AS FUCK, dubcon and offscreen noncon
Summary: No berries, no mockingjay, no rebellion. Katniss killed Peeta in the arena, and now she has to live with herself like every other victor.
Your thoughts: If you know anything about the Hunger Games, you know that the entire world is seriously dark and screwed in the head, and if you made it to the third book then you know what happened to Finnick when he became victor. This is not a happy story. It is a horrible story. But then, so is the canon it's based on, and I think the way this plays out is actually the way things might have gone, if Katniss had been just a little bit too hasty. Haymitch's POV is heartbreaking.

Title: 5 Places Cinna Came From
Author: aimmyarrowshigh
Series: the hunger games
Pairing: Cinna/Finnick, mostly
WIP?: Chaptered, complete
Genre: depressing. why don't i just go ahead and mark all hunger games fic from here on out as depressing, because if someone's managed to write a successful bit of humor based on this stuff then i haven't seen it.
Brief summary: District four, District one, District five, District twelve, District seven - 5 places Cinna came from
Your thoughts: This is an unusually (and beautifully!) fleshed out 5 things fic, every bit, and each gives Cinna a compelling backstory that somehow, even though they start in these hugely different places, manages to bring him to the same point. Finnick is deeply woven throughout. Cinna was one of my very favorite characters in the novels (next to Finnick, so double win for me) and the way his character is filled in and given not just one, but five complex origin stories just gives me endless enjoyment. I love him getting all this attention :)

Title: Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc
Author: etothepii
Series: Sherlock (BBC)/Addams family (go with it)
Pairing: pretty sure it goes John/Sherlock somewhere down the line
WIP?: Three complete one-shots, pretty sure that's all that's coming
Brief summary: "Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc. It's the family motto." "What does it mean?" "We gladly feast on those who would subdue us."
Your thoughts: Ok, I know it's weird, but it's also incredibly awesome. It's a thing I didn't know I wanted until I had it, and then once it was over I wanted more. I don't know anything about the Addams Family except that they're creepy and they're kooky and their theme song involves snapping, and also there's apparently a hairy dude named "Cousin It" involved because that's what my mom used to call me whenever my bangs got too long. I got through this fic just fine. It's very John-centric anyway, and his steadfast POV of all this ridiculous stuff just makes it even better.

Title: all straight lines circle sometime
Author: smallacts
Series: Suits/Time Traveler's Wife
Pairing: Harvey/Mike
WIP?: Chaptered, complete
Brief summary: "July 1994, Harvey is 17, Mike is 24"
Your thoughts: Time Traveler's Wife AUs are my crack. I will read all of the Time Traveler's Wife AUs I can get my hands on, no exceptions, and I'm stoked that this one was executed so well. This story handles the most intriguing aspects of the TTW concept very delicately and applies them nicely to the boys and their character development - great overall effect.

alright that's enough to be getting on with. finals, i have them. off to write about german foreign policy. yay bundestag.

new fandom y'all

Title: Pizza and a Movie
Author: Closer
Series: Suits
Pairing: Harvey/Mike
WIP?: Chaptered, complete (with a bonus two more retellings right here.)
Genre: AU
Brief summary: Harvey's still a lawyer but Mike's the Pizza delivery boy for Harvey's favourite pizza place.
Your thoughts: The Suits fandom is pretty hit-or-miss for me, and this is a hit. I love the way that small scenes from the series work their way into the alternate universe and - I don't know, it's fluff, the characterizations are excellent, and so is the banter. And you feel good by the end of it. What more can you want?

For those of you that haven't seen Suits, Mike is an excitable, slightly clueless genius with daddy issues. He works with Harvey, a domineering, high-powered genius who makes a living being wily and exploiting peoples' weaknesses. You can imagine what happens to poor Mike in fanfiction.

Title: Excerpts From The Gospel of Harvey Specter, edited by Michael "Forever Awesome" Ross, 2011, 1st Ed.
Author: mclachland
Series: Suits
Pairing: Harvey/Mike
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Brief Summary: Mike can so read people. Or maybe just Harvey, who's pretty much an open book.
Your thoughts: Continuing my thought up there: That is why I appreciate the hell out of fic, like this one, that depicts Mike as someone who, yes, really admires Harvey, but also has a backbone and a personality besides "NOTICE MEEEEE". I really like the way this story is laid out, where it kind of skips around and throws in these little addenda but it never really feels abrupt or out of place. Mike's voice in this is pretty hilarious.

If Harvey Specter were a textual medium, he'd be a Gospel. Although Mike is sure that, given a choice, Harvey would choose to be the whole Bible and Genesis would pretty much end up being, "And on the eighth Day, God was like, 'Dude, I almost forgot. I totally need to make a guy who can be me and do my work on Earth, therefore freeing the common man of all his burdens -- including the burdens of his wallet. And living in a multi-million dollar high rise in New York couldn't hurt. He can be my gift to the world. I'll call him Harvey and give him stupidly expensive suits and an oddly perfect mouth.'"

Title: All the Right Moves
Author: jumpfall
Series: Suits
Pairing: none, surprisingly
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Brief Summary: There's one box of files on the desk, another on the floor at his feet, and the couch is a lost cause. They've multiplied since Mike was last here, but then again, they would have to have in order to cover the roughly one hundred and fifty trials Harvey was involved in over the course of his two year stint as ADA. And Harvey's going to go over every single one of them. [Tag to 1x11.]
Your thoughts: I don't like this for Harvey and Mike. Yes, they're solid, but the main reason I adore it is for what it does for the other characters. Jessica, Louis, Rachel and Donna all have parts in this that I adore, and their voices are excellent. I especially like the layer it adds to Louis' character and the character redemption it gives Rachel (I am soo exasperated with what they've done to her on the show).

And now something to mess with your head:
Title: The Czernak Protocol
Author: lindermere
Series: Star Trek reboot
Pairing: Eh, Kirk/McCoyish, but it's pretty gen
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Genre: amnesia!fic, dark
Brief Summary: Jim undergoes medically induced amnesia after a disastrous mission. Gen-friendly sci-fi.
Your thoughts: Wow. This is fascinating. I love lindermere's work because she has honest-to-god creative, sci-fi premises (check out her other fics as well, they've got some pretty cool twists to 'em). The whole idea of the Czernak protocol is just super interesting and I love the ramifications and the way it plays out. Even without the star trek characters and background, it's an amazing sci-fi story, and the unease that tickles in the back of your mind throughout is awesome. Excellent writing.
Title: Never Leave a Trace
Author: sam_storyteller
Series: White Collar
Pairing: Neal/Elizabeth/Peter
WIP?: Chaptered, complete
Genre: Fantasy, really. Kind of like a dark fairytale.
Brief Summary: Neal Caffrey can steal souls. Peter Burke has two shadows. Everything's normal...except when it isn't.
Your thoughts: If you've ever read American Gods, this fic has very much the same feel... I'd almost call it a crossover in terms of style and mysticism alone. You can taste the Neil Gaiman influence. The author creates this world that just sucks you in, even though it's never really explained, and everything and everyone in it is just so damn interesting.
Plus, the writing style is gorgeous.
In dark corners, in quiet voices, at other times they said this: that he could do magic, real magic, prison magic. He'd once drawn a bird so real it flew off the page. He couldn't be tattooed; the ink ran right out of his skin while he slept. On the outside, he'd jumped off a ledge four floors above ground and walked away unhurt. He could walk through prison bars. He could tell your fortune in the color of your eyes. If you gave him a lit cigarette, he could hypnotize a man just by flicking it back and forth. He could steal your soul if you let him draw you, but he wouldn't (but he had once).

I could spend all day recc'ing sam_storyteller's fic, so just to save time I'ma tell you: go read her stuff (His? I shouldn't stereotype). Whatever, it's awesome, all of it will blow your mind, especially the White Collar and Sherlock bits, hop to it.

Title: Grace of God
Author: geneticallydead
Series: Oz
Pairing: Keller/Beecher
Genre: dark. darkdarkdark. Like most of the stuff that comes out of Oz.
WIP?: Complete, and there's a prequel here.
Brief Summary: AU for the end of Season 6
Your thoughts: As long as we're on the subject of fucked-up things going down in prison... This is like a messed-up heart break. It covers Tobias' decay so intimately and so well that you get a real look into what a life like his does to a person.

Gather round the campfire kiddies, we got us a story to tell. Less-new newbies telling the other newbies the gossip THEY heard on their first day in EmCity: that’s O’Reily, lord of the fucking dance – don’t get on his bad side. That’s Alvarez, short-fused spic (plucked a hack’s eyes out with his naked fingers once). That’s KellerandBeecher.

Don’t call ‘em fags, don’t get too close, and never *ever* touch Beecher.

Title: Unorthodox Methods
Author: captanddeastar
Series: Supernatural/White Collar
Pairing: Neal/Peter, background Peter/Elizabeth, Sam/Jess
Genre: humor! to switch it up, 'cause we're being all kinds of dark up there.
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Brief Summary: AU from original premise of SPN – Sam goes to law school and eventually joins the FBI, where he gets assigned as Peter’s probie, and the New York FBI office staff are amused, and eventually, slightly traumatized.
Your thoughts: Hee. Sam and Neal would totally get on like a house on fire. Peter's a little OOC (neediness!abound), but it's all in good fun and the spirit of the fic, so you kind of write it off as artistic license and just go with it. I also like the bits of Dean lurking around the edges of this story.

When Jones sees Peter walk into his office, he shakes his head immediately, and says, “Respectfully, I’ve got to tell you that if this is another thing where you try and get somebody who works for you make you feel better about Caffrey’s crush on Andre the Giant, I am just not comfortable with that. No offense, Peter.”

I've been trying to get some Doctor Who, since that's what the POLL said people want, but nothing I've read lately has really inspired me too much. Either that or it's super outdated. Bugger. I'll keep looking!

happy summer

Hi, scared of the real world finding me, posting from an alias, woooo.

Title: MERLIN (or, as it is called in my head, "THE GREAT FRAT BOY!AU")
Author: moonythestrals
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin, Gwen/Morgana on the side
WIP?: Chaptered, complete, with a fun little coda that makes it all come together
Genre: Humor (you will laugh out loud, no exceptions)
Brief Summary: An Exercise in Script Writing by Two People Who Really Shouldn't Even Be Trying
Your thoughts?: It's like the author took all my favorite, stupid parts about real frat boys and channeled them into a collegiate Arthur who is still somehow a) imminently likable and b) Arthur. Gwen, "Morgana" and "the dragon" make an awesome supporting cast that offers a backdrop to the boy's developing relationship and developing screenplay. I APPROVE.

Arthur is apparently in this on-again, off-again, kind-of-exclusive-but-still-strictly-just-hooking-up thing with the sorority girl Morgan, and is, consequently, switching between writing her as a vicious, soul-sucking bitch half the time, and wasting pages on how the camera should zoom in on her tits the other half.

Title: Lists
Author: londondrowning
Series: The OC
Pairing: Ryan/Theresa
WIP?: Complete. There's a Seth POV followup here.
Genre: Sad? Introspective?
Brief Summary: They both deserve something better, but this is what they have.
Your thoughts: I love this. Brilliantly written, so so sad, and honestly it's the way I'd have liked to see the whole Theresa/Ryan arc go, because in this they actually act like two people who are best friends and have a history and love each other but aren't in love, whereas in the show their relationship kind of got shafted.

Title: You Ruined Everything (In The Nicest Way)
Author: jmtorres
Series: White Collar
Pairing: none, really
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Genre: AU as fuuuuu
Brief Summary: A story of missed connections, in which Peter doesn't know what to say, Neal doesn't seem to want to hear it, and Elizabethan translation proves vital.
Your thoughts?: This is a very original (at least, that I've read in this fandom) and highly unlikely premise. Having said that, if you can get over the sheer improbability of it, it's a well thought-out and interesting depiction of this premise - I really like the different implications here and the way the boys need a little help to bridge the communication gap.

Okay it's sleep time now.
Sometimes you come across a fic that just needs to be shared with the world.

Title: Full Disclosure
Author: anon
Series: Um. Star Trek, with a healthy dose of - oh, just read the summary.
Pairing: the entire bridge crew pretty much gets it on
WIP?: Chaptered, complete
Genre: HUMOR
Brief summary: Kirk discovers his command crew are not who they pretend to be:
Spock is an immortal human with a ridiculous number of powers that used to eat brains before he went vegetarian!
Bones is an ancient Greco-Roman god of erotic love! With wings!
Uhura is a Na'vi that dumped Jake's ass and reverse-avatared herself into a human body!
Chekov is the time-traveling father of the man that saved the human race from the terminators back in 2029!
Scotty was turned into a zombie by one of his mates back in 2004 and has been undead ever since!
Sulu... is a stoner!
How does Kirk find out? How will he react to all of these shocking revelations? How will their powers combined this affect away missions? Will Bones start an orgy? You decide!
Your thoughts: You guys. I laughed for days.

Alright so RL got in the way - mostly I'm just paranoid about coworkers googling my username or something - but I'll start easing back into it about now, maybe start small with one or two and work my way up to the big leagues. This is to let you know I'm alive. Hello! Hope you're still listening!
Title: Like Glass
Author: entagled_now
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Sam/Gabriel
Rating: R
Warnings: Slightly dark themes, blood
Word Count: 15,000
Spoilers: 5x08
Summary: Sam wakes up on the bathroom floor.
Your Thoughts: This is one of those fics where I just have to keep going back for more; original concept and execution, dead-on characterizations.

More Supernatural and a SPN/Good Omens crossover under the sheets-- er, cut. Yep.Collapse )
