ciao!

Living in Italy with no internet these days, so apologies for the long break between updates.

Keeping it short: I have a new fandom. Hopefully, after this, you will too.

Title: Illogical
Author: waldorph
Series: Star Trek (reboot)
Pairing: Too many to name, but the overarching theme is K/S
WIP?: Chaptered, probably complete though the author might choose to tack on a couple one-shots in the future.
Brief summary: Jim never takes up Pike's dare to do better, and the answer is √π233/hy7
Your thoughts: This fic is boss. It goes through all of the characters - even the minor ones, or the ones that probably exist somewhere but didn't quite make it into the movie - and fleshes them out brilliantly, makes them real people (My favorite is the one about Chekov, on account of how I'm a complete sucker for the kid and his perspective).
There's a couple arcs thrown in with a bunch of short stories and vignettes. The first one is here.

Title: The Little Vulcan (because I smoked crack before I made this rec post or something, idek)
Author: ayalesca
Series: Star Trek (reboot)/The Little Prince
Pairing: none
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Brief summary: Once upon a time there was a sandy asteroid.
Your thoughts: It's a little weird, I know, but it's completely worth it for the watercolors alone. Also it's darn cute.

Title: Fresh Egg
Author: sadiekate
Series: Veronica Mars
Pairing: none
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Brief Summary: Logan and Wallace do a physics project. Logan thinks a lot, while Wallace gives him meaningful glances. I swear it's not boring, though.
Your thoughts: I don't know why the boys never actually hung out and bonded over how much stupid trouble Veronica got herself into, but this fic fulfilled that gap in my life. They're both sassy and in-character - one of the things that turned me off the vmars fandom was the fact that the show's level of sarcasm and banter was hard to translate into written form. I think this fic does that quite well.

Title: Seventeen Things that Happened to Rory Williams, After
Author: Scribe
Series: Doctor Who
Pairing: Eleven/Rory
WIP?: One-shot, as far as I can tell, and complete
Brief Summary: In which Amy dies and Rory, eventually, keeps going.
Your thoughts: This broke my heart. It's a really gradual and introspective look at the grieving process, and how these boys can find each other again even after the glue holding them together suddenly vanishes. Jack makes an awesome cameo, which makes me happy because he's been forgotten lately, and the whole thing has enough funny moments that the tragedy gets balanced out.

I'm sorry for the crackpot dumping of fandoms, but I was digging through my bookmarks and this was what stuck out. Hope you like! And I'll try to get to internet sooner as opposed to later :)

baby calc ain't no thang

OH HAI THAR

it's been less than a month since my last post, so i'm gonna get these off my chest before i descend into that spiral of midterms that took me out of commission for a while last time.

NEW FAV THING EVER: soo the BBC did this modern-day remake of Sherlock Holmes, and it's fascinating because it's faithful to the original in a lot of really awesome, blink-and-you'll-miss-the-obscure-reference ways, and in other ways it just tells tradition to cry me a river and blog about it. or something. i'm not really sure where i was going with that.
it's also kind of problematic in a lot of places, but i'll let someone else go into superawesome poetic detail on that, because it would otherwise be me getting all worked up over a fandom that has treated me extremely, extremely well.

i shall now share.
Title: they tell me their secrets (will you tell me yours too)
Author: etothepii
Series: Sherlock
Pairing: none
WIP?: one-shot, complete
Brief Summary: In Afghanistan, the supplies tell him when they're running low, and the cars always, always tell him when strangers have touched them, and John gets known as having a knack (paranoia, his men call it, but he's never missed a single car bomb) for keeping his men safe.
Your thoughts: I love this premise. This fandom is so creative and out of the box and this is one of the reasons I haven't gotten bored yet - i love the little personalities everything has and the way it fits into canon (not to mention the resolution of 1x03, argh).

Title: Sally Donovan in Five Daemons
Author: Anon
Series: Sherlock/His Dark Materials
WIP?: Chaptered (sort of, in that it's comment!fic)), complete
Brief Summary: Everyone wants to know what Sherlock's daemon is, so of course I go and write Sally Donovan.
Your thoughts?: Sally Donovan is the hardest part of this series for me to watch. She's become a really uncomfortable one-note punchline and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some character development in the near future. In the meantime, I'll stick with this.
(it gets confusing because there are two anons pseudo-building off of each other, but if you can backtrack in the comments there's a really good first part about John's daemon here.

Title: Memory is like a whatchacallit
Author: jmtorres
Series: Chuck
Pairing: chuck/bryce
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Genre: creeeeepy
Brief Summary: He has a list of what he's supposed to do every day and he follows it in sequence.
Your thoughts: Ugh. This is just heartbreaking, and really hard to explain in a way that won't give it all away, but the author did a fantastic job with my personal worst nightmare. I think my favorite part is where the reader is trying to figure out what's wrong and using other characters' reactions (where are spot on) to help with that realization. also an excellent treatment of Bryce. So good.

Title: Neoliberal Holmes
Author: magnetic_pole
Series: Sherlock
Pairing: None
Genre: meta
Brief Summary: Everything I know about the twenty-first century I learned from Sherlock Holmes.
Your thoughts: I don't rec meta. I don't read meta. This is the first time, since the community's conception in 2006, that I have ever posted meta. However, this isn't really written like an essay - it's beautiful, and poetic, and it wholly encompasses within a few words the things that made me feel uncomfortable while watching a show (the things I couldn't put a name to at the time). It's thought-provoking and well done. As addicted as I am, watching it with this perspective changes my appreciation somewhat.

okay, things to do, but i've got a million more sherlock holmes recs coming your way just as soon as i get this paper taken care of

Oct. 16th, 2010

WOAH WHAT TANI KEEPING A PROMISE WHAT

i could be studying. i really, really could. but i'm not.

Alrighty, so, to start us off, since the poll said people thought we were getting too PG (see how I keep referencing it? DO YOU SEE?), let's get going with some honest-to-goodness slash:

Title: South of Tower Parkway, Part II
Author: rawumber
Series: Criminal Minds
Pairing: Spencer/Morgan
WIP?: Chaptered, complete
Genre: AU, though it doesn't fuck with canon that hard. oh yeah and there's sex.
Brief Summary: AU where Undercover!Morgan runs into College!Reid.
Your thoughts: I first got into this Criminal Minds fic looking for some Morgan-hanging-out-and-being-fucking-adorable-with-Garcia fic (seriously, my first few googles were ridiculously specific), but then i figured out that this entire fandom seems to have a giant kink for Morgan/Spencer. I didn't get it at first, but after a few wayward clicks, I totally, totally do.
This one's really fun for me because it's preseries, it's got the Reed technobabble down and I just loove dangerous!Morgan. So hard. Generally really awesome.

Title: The Underwire Job
Author: Brown Betty
Series: Leverage
Pairing: Parker/Hardison, Parker/Eliot/Hardison
WIP?: Chaptered, deliciously complete
Genre: Humor and some action
Brief Summary: Parker recruits Eliot for a side job. Comedy and horror ensue.
Your thoughts:
"And that was why Parker had brought him in, he realized, brokenly, in the ladies' fitting room of Nordstrom's. Parker was assembling her own tiny team for a job."
YOU GUYS. THIS IS THE CUTEST THING EVER. Seriously, this is the fic (and there's arcs of it, i sincerely recommend you read them ALL) that got me into this fandom and into this pairing; I believe I am secretly in love with a well-done Eliot POV. Aw, hell. Parker and social dysfunction are just so awesome together.

Okay, I would post more, but I have this thing called a midterm in a subject called calculus that i have zero natural aptitude for, so in the name of my GPA and any number of scholarships I'm just gonna bounce out.
See, baby? I can keep a promise. I've changed, I swear.

a whole summer what?

what uuuup playas
I know it's been a while, but I'm working on this really gradual process of making it up to you.

...so gradual, it may take me several days to actually finish writing this one rec post.

Title: Life Unbruised
Author: triptohere
Series: Skins
Pairing: none
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Summary: When Cook had come back, he’d made everyone cry.
Your thoughts: This is a really great Pandora POV - the author handled her crazy self perfectly, and she's an excellent lens to view the aftermath of the shitshow that was the S4 finale. I've been looking for some kind of resolution for all the loose ends that got left behind and this is pretty much it. MAJOR SPOILERS.

Title: Nerds of the Earth, Take Note!
Author: Betty
Series: Iron Man/Leverage (Look at that. Have you ever seen a crossover that makes you want to click faster?)
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Summary: "You have got to be shitting me. I am trying to take apart Tony Stark's fucking PhD project?"
Your thoughts: HEE. Hardison and Stark go head to head in a good old fashioned geek-off and, quite frankly, it's the best thing ever. It gives me a quiet moment of glee in the small, fifteen-year-old part of me that played WoW, watched Firefly on repeat and wanted nothing more than to design webpages for the rest of her life (unfortunately, i wasn't all that great at that last bit). And then the rest of the team comes swooping in for some major fuzzies and it's just great. READ THIS, IT WILL MAKE YOU SMILE.

And now, because our poll had a request for more Leverage,

Title: The Chainsaw Job
Author: Annerb
Series: Leverage
Pairing: Beginnings of Hardison/Parker if you squint
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Summary: "In case of zombies, please use the stairs."
Genre: Extremely morbid Eliot!humor in some parts, kind of sad in others. Implied character death.
Your thoughts?: This is brilliantly done. It is a completely believable rendition of what the Leverage crew would do in the zombie apocalypse, and I can imagine every inch of these characters' reactions actually taking place (the Eliot POV is awesome too)

(and for the record, yes, i will be referring to that poll pretty frequently from here on out, and that's going to get awkwardly inaccurate fast if you don't go fill that beezy out right now)

Um. Okay, I have an editorial to write, plus a paper, plus a chapter and a half of calc to get through by 8am tomorrow morning. I absolutely have to go but i wanted to let you know:

I AM STILL HERE.
I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN YOU.
and, most importantly: more is on the way :)

I'm actually reccing things!

Hey, community-at-large. So I usually get my fics FROM this community and see no reason to go out searching. BUT I'm skimming along the LGBTfest community since the event is going on, and I figured I'd pop in and let you know which ones that I read are worth reading.

Title: A Song for Someone
Author: chicafrom3
Series: Glee
Pairing: Santana/Matt, Santana/Puck, Santana/Brittany
WIP?: short oneshot, complete
Genre: buildungsroman! (coming of age, self-discovery), queer
Brief Summary:
a response to this prompt: Matt Rutherford and Santana Lopez, everyone expects him to get jealous of her on-again-off-again sexcapades with Puck. Or to freak out over her it's-not-a-relationship-it's-just-sex thing with Brittany. Being the aromantic asexual best friend, Matt just wishes she'd stop telling him all the dirty details.
author's summary: In which Santana gets laid, Matt doesn't, and relationships are complicated.
Your thoughts: This is just downright adorable. Nevermind the fact that it deals with things all along the queer spectrum, nevermind the fact that there's a *gasp* asexual character in a fanfiction, it was just fun to read. It's a short, well-done fic that was like a little bubble of the show. It's totally my canon now.
link (Mods, I don't remember how to make a link for the life of me) http://fandomfrom3.livejournal.com/35410.html

Title: On Paper
Author: Delphi
Series: Harry Potter
Pairing: none
WIP?: short oneshot, complete
Genre: gen (again with the coming of age queer theme tho)
Brief Summary:
response to this prompt: Harry Potter, any character, A canon character uses spells/potions to transition from one sex to another.
author's summary: The curious authority of paper and ink. (The spell in question from the prompt is the Magic Quill that sends people Hogwarts letters)
Your thoughts: This is my favorite of the lgbtfest fics I've read so far. It is short but brilliant. what about trans people in Harry Potter? How is that dealt with? Alastor Moody if FtM, and magic doesn't solve everything.

poll poll poll poll

Hey there!
This is still your lovely mod, tanihissatsu, but since I refused to update to a plus account I'm using this other screenname to post a poll! (wooooo~ technology)

It's not often (well, relatively not often) that we ask for feedback, but it's been a while since Ivy and I have touched base with any of you and I, for one, am genuinely curious: what do you want to see? What makes your fangirl/boyish hearts go pitter pat? If there's a fandom we don't know about, or that we've been neglecting, we'd like to amend that (who knows? maybe I'll get addicted to a new fandom in the process).

So, take a second, vote, let us know. We're interested to hear what you guys have to say :D

didja miss me?

hey guys, i'm the worst mod ever

school and work have been collectively kicking my ass. since i have work tomorrow morning, i figured the single most rational course of action for me right now would be to say a pleasant "screw you" to sleeping and try to make up for that with THE HUGEST MONSTER POST IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD EVAR.

or possibly just one or two recs. we'll see what happens to me - i'm feeling some zz's coming on.

first thing's first: mama's got herself a brand new fandom.

Title: The Art of (un)Living Dangerously Through Daring Acts of Boredom
Author: sparky77
Series: Being Human (oh my god you guys this show why do i love it so much)
Pairing: pretty heavy on the george/mitchell pre-slash, but it's still gen
WIP?: one-shot, complete
Genre: gen, as previously mentioned - a cute little introspective bit
Brief Summary: When you’ve done everything, been everyone, being boring becomes the most daring thing you can do.
Your thoughts: My god I love this show like crack. It's so beautifully domestic in such a desperate way and that's why it's different from? better than? the mass number of shows that have come out of this latest supernatural craze that birthed us things like true blood or the vampire diaries or whatever. There're all these show that are all about the doomed romances, and this sort of glorified mysticism that comes out of being a vampire/ghost/werewolf, and this show isn't about that and it's all the more real for it - i feel like this fanfic captures that whole feeling brilliantly.
(for those of you who haven't seen it yet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPGZGt4EArU. I don't think it would be physically possible for me to love mitchell more than I do in this moment)

Title: Monsters v. Aliens
Author: troyswann
Series: Being Human/Torchwood
WIP?: There's an amazing followup here but it looks like that's the end of it
Genre: gen, characterdeath in the way Jack does it
Brief Summary: "The lingering darkness in the valley is a lake of dark water. Just below its surface, Ianto holds his breath."
Your thoughts: This is so perfect. I love Mitchell being just a little bit scary, and the thought of him and Jack with a history long enough to bicker over. George and Ianto are so absolutely ready to be besties, you can feel it from their (marvelous) characterization. god if I could get one thing for christmas it would be more interaction between these two groups, just the way this author writes it.

[edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k3Ws--yQu8 i just can't stop.)

Title: Equinox
Author: luchia13
Series: Supernatural
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
WIP?: Chaptered, complete
Brief Summary: In which Castiel is the weird time-traveling freak who just might be the love of Dean Winchester's life.
Your thoughts: Sometimes, you read something and it instantly becomes one of your favorites ever. This is one of those times. I've reread it more than i can even count and it is more and more awesome every time - think "time traveller's wife" (a book, by the way, that i love unabashedly) with a bit of a twist and maybe, ultimately, a little more happiness.

remember that sleeping thing? i think i'ma do it now. but i have two months of backlog to dump on you people so sit tight, it'll come your way soon. :P

ugh life stop getting in my way

So, the way I see it right now, I have two options. I could either write one of the two papers I have due tomorrow, OR
i could write a rec for you lovely people!

TWO GUESSES AS TO WHICH ONE I'M GOING WITH

Title: Angels We Have Heard
Author: unoshot
Series: Supernatural
Pairing: none
WIP?: Nope, but there's two more in this series that are definitely worth reading
Brief Summary: Castiel looks for God. It is a tiresome and thankless task, and he is running out of time.
Your thoughts?: Castiel has, little by little, been growing on me as a character. This fic absolutely clinches that conviction. Oh, Cas.

Title: Merlin Emrys and the Totally Gay Triwizard Tournament
Author: twentysomething
Series: Merlin/Harry Potter
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
WIP?: (extremely long) One-shot, complete
Genre: Crack! just the way I like it
Brief Summary: "Merlin abruptly wakes up in History of Magic."
Your thoughts?: It's a weird hybrid of complete off-the-wall ridiculousness and actually kind of touching character insight. Also Merlin maybe pukes on Uther which is worth a lot of boy-mance dysfunctionality.

Title: Out Of This Room
Author: Dorinda
Series: Sherlock Holmes
Pairing: Holmes/Watson (as someone who loved these stories as a child, writing those words feels SO wrong)
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Genre: It varies with each path, so be prepared for extremely sad and also ho!yay
Brief Summary: Three roads lead from the room of the Three Garridebs: one of sorrow, one of suffering, and one of joy.
Your thoughts?: Okay, after I saw the movie, I just could NOT resist. IT WAS SO GOOD. UGH. So, in the spirit of things, I tracked this down - it's canon Conan Doyle (haha, canon-conan. I crack me up) as far as the basis of the story goes, and from there it is just fabulous. A brilliantly chosen jumping-off point.

Title: Vinegar Pistol
Author: puritybrown
Series: Torchwood/Scrubs
Pairing: JD/Captain Jack
WIP?: One-shot, complete
Genre: Extremely silly
Brief Summary: JD can feel his eyes widening. It's possible that he's suffered a psychotic break and is hallucinating this entire episode, but for the time being he's going to run with it, because if this is really real then he's about to become an alien-hunter's temporary sidekick, and life doesn't hand you that kind of opportunity every day.
Your thoughts?: Captain Jack has got his uses as an inter-fandom manho. It's like he can go anywhere, and, appropriately, this fic was apparently inspired by a "Captain Jack Harkness Sexes Everyone In Every Fandom Ever" challenge.
Edit: Here's a link that may work better: http://archiveofourown.org/works/86019?view_adult=true

Alright, hopefully that's enough to be getting on with, 'cause I really have to sit down and write things that will actually get me university credit and keep me from flunking every class I have ever. Much love to all, and I promise it won't be this long before my next update!

Edit:
But for the next time I need a distraction - does anybody have any White Collar fics? I really LOVE this fandom, and I want to get more into it, but I don't have as much time to track stuff down as in yesteryear. Remember, commenting is your friend.

Just a quickie...

Title: Before&After
Author: helena_eternal
Rating: PG
Series: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing/Characters: John/Rodney, ensemble
Summary: Governments will push and push, but there are times when The People push back. Zelenka's POV.

Title: Displacement
Author: smilebackwards
Characters: John Sheppard, ensemble
Rating: PG-13
Series: Stargate Atlantis
Summary: John isn't really sure how to feel about the fact that he seems to have been unofficially adopted by SG-1. [tag to The Return]

enjoy your guilt recs

Hey guys!

Soooo, we sort of skipped october. but in my defense, it was a really busy month (back in school, dear sweet lord this many classes was a bad idea) and halloween was a little crazier than expected (santa barbara, anyone?) so i didn't get my last-minute update chance that i was vaguely hoping for.

i'm here now, though, and that's enough, right? right?

10 behind the cut with a shit ton of fandoms, not motivated by guilt at allCollapse )

woooow, i was going through my bookmarks, and it took a while to get back to wherever i'd left off.
bright side of that is it makes it easy to rec more stuff, what with all the backlog. huzzah!

I'll come back later and do all the "your thoughts" bits, because that sort of is my favorite part, but for now it is past 1 and i am tired enough to fall asleep on the couch. my couch is quite comfortable, so this would not be a travesty or anything, but i'd rather make it to my bed and brush my teeth and all that.
